America East Daily Word - January 6
Playing at Fenway Park is an experience like no other. The tradition, the history, the atmosphere.
And we aren’t even talking about baseball.
Three America East schools that sponsor men’s ice hockey will have a chance to experience Fenway in its most unique form – as an ice rink.
Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont will all take the ice in one of sports’ most storied venues this weekend.
Vermont takes on UMass on Saturday afternoon before Maine and New Hampshire battle in the nightcap.
New Hampshire hopes that the Fenway will turn its season around. While admitting it will be an exciting experience, the Wildcats know the game is a crucial one for them in Hockey East. UNH picked up a 4-3 win over Maine earlier this season. Check out the pregame coverage from Foster’s Daily Democrat and the Union Leader.
Maine, meanwhile, is on a tear as of late going 7-1-1 in its last nine games including a nice 3-1 over Vermont on Wednesday. The Black Bears also recently won the Florida College Classic with wins over Clarkson and UMass. The Maine alumni teams swept the New Hampshire teams on Thursday night setting the stage for the current Black Bears to pick up the trifecta over the archrival Wildcats. The Bangor Daily News has more.
Vermont has taken its fair share of bumps this year but head coach Kevin Sneddon wants his players to enjoy Fenway and “soak in the fun” of the event. Still, though, the Cats understand the importance of the game if they are to make a run here in the second half of the season. Sneddon appeared on NESN last night during the Bruins game against Calgary. Check out his interview, here.
We had six hoops games last night to wrap up the second full session of conference play, two on the women’s side and four on the men’s.
The New Hampshire men traveled to Hartford to take on the Hawks. Andres Torres scored 27 points for the host Hawks leading them past the Wildcats, 56-49. The Hartford Courant has the story. Meanwhile, the New Hampshire women continued their strong play defeating Hartford in Durham by the final of 64-45.
Elsewhere, the Stony Brook men took on Binghamton at the Events Center and Vestal, a venue which has been severely unkind to the Seawolves. Stony Brook picked up their first win at Binghamton since 2002 with a 60-54 win. Binghamton’s women’s squad, however, went into Stony Brook and snapped the Seawolves’ three-game winning streak. The Press and Sun Bulletin has more from both games.
The remaining two men’s games did not disappoint. Vermont found it’s offensive rhythm against Boston University dispatching the Terriers, 83-69. Brian Voelkel was a beast on the boards grabbing 16 rebounds. Ted Ryan covered the game for the Burlington Free Press. And lastly, Albany continued to score the basketball at will. Gerardo Suero, Logan Aronhalt and Mike Black all scored 22 points as the Danes rallied from an early first-half deficit to defeat UMBC, 89-69. The Baltimore Sun brings you coverage from the RAC.

America East Daily Word - January 5
It’s only the second conference game of the season for the men’s basketball teams at UMBC and Albany but its already being dubbed a “big one” in Baltimore.
Albany and UMBC both started the conference slate with victories on Monday and now take aim at going 2-0. UMBC hasn’t started 2-0 since the 2007-2008 season while Albany hasn’t done it since 2005-2006. Both teams advanced to the NCAA Tournament during those seasons.
So 2-0 is a big deal.
UMBC enters the game coming off a nice road win at New Hampshire thanks to a big night from Chase Plummer, who tallied 23 points and grabbed seven boards. Albany, meanwhile, continues to light up the scoreboard dropping 88 on Monday against Hartford. Four players scored in double figures for the Danes led by Gerardo Suero’s 24 points.
Andrew Santillo of the Troy Record has all the pregame buzz from the New York State capital in today’s paper. The non-conference season is over and as far as Albany head coach Will Brown is concerned, both teams are unbeaten.
“We’re both 1-0,” Brown said in the article. “It’s a new season.”
Read all of the coverage from the Record, here.
The only two games last night were on the women’s side as Albany hosted UMBC and Boston University traveled to Vermont.
Albany’s stingy defense set the tone at SEFCU Arena against Retrievers as the Danes held one of the league’s top-scoring duos – Erin Brown and Michelle Kurowski – to just 12 points. Albany received 15 points apiece from Ebone Henry and Julie Forster. Check out the recap from the Times Union in Albany.
Up in Burlington, Vermont rallied back from a 15-point deficit to draw even with Boston U. on several occasions in the second half but the Terriers held on at the end for an exciting 61-60 win. Rashidat Agboola notched a double-double of 12 points and 17 rebounds to lead three Terriers in double-figures and Vermont got 20 points and nine boards from Lauren Buschmann. Check out the CatamounTV highlights and the Burlington Free Press recap.
We’ve got several more intriguing matchups tonight all over America East-land.
For the men, one of the fiercest rivalries in the conference is renewed when Boston U. takes on Vermont in Burlington. Ted Ryan has the pregame coverage for the Burlington Free Press. Elsewhere on the hardwood, Stony Brook and Binghamton square off at the Events Center. Check out the Press and Sun Bulletin for the preview. Lastly, read up on Hartford trying to right the ship tonight against UNH in the Hartford Courant.
On the women’s side, Hartford travels to take on a UNH squad that played tough at UMBC on Monday while Stony Brook hosts Binghamton.

America East Daily Word - January 4
After a 6 a.m. run around campus, Binghamton’s new President Harvey Stenger began his first day leading the university.
Stenger spent most of his first day speaking with university vice presidents about Binghamton’s NYSUNY 2020 proposal and later met with media members.
The President has a short term goal of “meeting everyone” and then strategizing on how to take Binghamton to the next level.
“Whether I shake their hand, or we have a long conversation, or we chat over lunch, my goal is to meet everyone,” Stenger said in an interview.
In that vein, Stenger plans on eating the in dining halls at least once a week when the students return to campus. There, he can get a better understanding about what is happening with students on campus.
Several television news stations covered Stenger’s first day at Binghamton. News channel 34 has some video highlights while Action News 12 and Inside Binghamton both published stories.
Vermont’s Four McGlynn has certainly impressed so far in his rookie campaign in Burlington. The success of the Vermont sharpshooter grabbed the attention of his hometown York Dispatch and sports writer John Walk. The article delves into adjustments McGlynn has made in his first season in Vermont.
“You get past your man and you have big guys waiting inside that can punch the ball into the stands," McGlynn said in the article. "You can shoot floaters and stuff. But when you're going to the basket, you have to go up stronger.”
Conference play resumes tonight with several women’s games on tap – two very intriguing matchups at that. Boston University opens the league season by heading to Vermont to take on the Catamounts. UVM leads America East squads in points and rebounds per game but Boston U. has taken 16 of the last 22 meetings. Tip-off from Patrick Gym in Burlington is at 7.
Meanwhile, two 1-0 teams take the floor in Albany as the Great Danes host UMBC. Both teams are coming off exciting single-digit wins. UMBC came back from 11 down to defeat UNH on Monday while Albany played tough defense in a low-scoring win at Hartford. That tip from SEFCU Arena is also at 7.

America East Daily Word - January 3
If day one served as any indication of how unpredictable and how exciting the conference season will be, the next two months will be very entertaining on the hardwood.
Five of the eight conference hoops games last night were decided by single digits and four of those five were by six points or less.
Perhaps the two best games of the night featured the squads from New Hampshire and UMBC. The men squared off in Durham while the women tangled in Baltimore. Only a combined eight points separated the teams and the games set the stage for a doozy of a conference season. The UNH women led by as many as 11 over UMBC and took that lead through the under-eight media timeout in the second half. UMBC, however, closed on a 20-7 run fueled by Erin Brown and Kristin Coles to come away with a 67-65 win. The Baltimore Sun has more from this one.
Meanwhile, the Wildcat and Retriever men were locked up in a good one in Durham. Each team built a ten point lead but UMBC was able to hold on to its lead thanks to a huge night from Chase Plummer. The sophomore continues to impress in his second season in the Retriever black and gold, scoring 23 points and grabbing seven boards last night. Foster’s Daily Democrat has all your postgame reactions from UMBC’s 82-76 win.Albany went home and home with Hartford with the women playing in West Hartford and the men dueling in Albany. Hartford entered the game with the best record among conference women’s teams but the Dane women came away with a 40-37 victory in a defensive battle. The Times Union and Hartford Courant have the recaps. The Great Dane men flexed their offensive muscles, led by Gerardo Suero’s 24 points, and downed Hartford, 88-63. The Troy Record and Times Union have all your print coverage and check out the video highlights from CBS 6.
Maine and Binghamton tipped off the conference slate with a double-dip in Vestal. The Bearcat women received huge contributions from Viive Rebane (26 points) and Orla O’Reilly (22 points) and took care of business with a 72-54 win. Alasdair Fraser scored a game-high 25 points for the Maine men and the Black Bears pulled away from Binghamton late, 76-61. Fox 40 has the highlights while the Press and Sun Bulletin, Bangor Daily News and Portland Press Herald have the game stories.Stony Brook made it a clean sweep against Vermont last night with the men rallying for a 65-59 win on Long Island and the win doing the same in a 54-47 win in Burlington. Newsday recaps the men’s contest while WCAX has video from both contests.
