Few conferences have impacted Major League Lacrosse as much as America East has over the past few years. Just months after Stony Brook's Kevin Crowley was selected first in the MLL Draft, four former league standouts were named 2011 All-Stars on Monday bringing the total of former America East players honored to 14 since 2008.
Former UMBC All-America East performers Brendan Mundorf, Peet Pollion and Drew Westervelt, all who play for the Denver Outlaws, and Albany alum Jordan Levine from Rochester Rattlers were among this year's selections.
Mundorf, the 2005 and 2006 America East Player of the Year, is making his third All-Star appearance and is in the conversation for who the best player in the league is. He leads MLL with 29 points on 18 goals and 11 assists and has his team in a tie for first place at 5-1.
Westervelt and Pollion, both former first-team All-America East honorees have combined for 23 goals and eight assists. Levine has 13 points on four goals and nine assists for the Rattlers. All three players will be appearing in their second MLL All-Star game, which will be played on Saturday, June 9 at 8 p.m. at Harvard Stadium, home of the Boston Cannons, and will be televised on ESPN2.
America East's impact has gone beyond the All-Star game. Mundorf set an MLL record with 10 points in a win over Hamilton on May 14 and earned Offensive Player of the Week honors for his effort. He also took home the honor on June 20 while reigning America East Player of the Year Jordan McBride, who plays for Rochester, earned Rookie of the Week honors that week.
If past precedence is a good indication, America East will factor in which team wins the 2011 MLL Title as well. Just two years ago, former Albany star Merrick Thomson earned MLL Playoff MVP honors after leading Toronto to the championship.
