Hartford Reaches First Title Game Over UMBC
WEST HARTFORD, Conn.—The Hartford Hawks will play Stony Brook in the first championship game in program history after defeating the UMBC Retrievers on Wednesday, 14-11 at Al-Marzook Field. The game will be Saturday at 3 p.m. at Stony Brook.
The Hawks (10-6) fell behind 4-1 in the first quarter before riding a 6-0 run to take the lead for good. UMBC (6-7) was never able to recover despite pulling to within a goal midway through the third. The shots were flying with a total of 74 between the teams, compared to just 11 saves.
The game was over when, up 13-10 with UMBC’s goalie Brian McCullough acting as an extra defender, senior Hawk Brendan Marlow pulled a couple moves to get free and scored his first goal of the season, the final of the game for the hosts.
Hartford was led by hat tricks from Ryan Compitello, Jared Franze and Carter Bender, who combined for four assists as well. Retrievers Rob Grimm and Joe Lusgarten led the attack for the visitors with four and three goals, respectively.
Bender leads all Hawks with 30 goals on the season, bringing him to 48 points, which are both good for second in the conference.
Senior Tim Fallon dominated from the face off X, going 19-10 while scooping a game-high 18 ground balls. He also scored in the second quarter with his signature windup to give the Hawks two goals in five seconds and bring the lead to 7-4.
It was a sloppy game that saw the Hawks turn the ball over slightly more than the Retrievers, 21-18.
Hartford will look to clean it up ahead of Saturday’s matchup with a Seawolves team that beat them 10-8 in early April. The Hawks led the game going into the fourth quarter before giving up seven goals.
“Stony Brook is who we wanted all year,” said Hartford coach Peter Lawrence, who brought his team to the title game for the first time in school history. “Now we have to get it together and win it this time.”

Tonight, the men's lacrosse championship gets underway. A pair of tournament matchups highlights tonight's action as No. 4 Binghamton heads over to Long Island to face No. 1 Stony Brook while No. 3 UMBC looks for a little payback at No. 2 Hartford.
Both games begin at 7 p.m. tonight.
So what exactly are we looking at?
On Long Island, the Seawolves have been on a tear against America East teams over the last two seasons. The Seawolves have not lost to a conference foe since May 2, 2009, when they fell to UMBC in the America East Championship Game. They now begin their quest for a back-to-back conference titles. Part of the Seawolves' success can be attributed to the emergence of junior attack Russ Bonnano.

And then there were four...each!
The America East lacrosse season has whittled itself down to four men's and four women's teams in the hunt for the conference championship and a spot in the NCAA tournament. So who's in and how did they get there?
The women's quartet took until Sunday afternoon to finally shake out, but we are left with No. 1 Albany, No. 2 Boston U., No. 3 UMBC and No. 4 New Hampshire. Albany continued rolling through its schedule without a loss, topping UMBC, 12-11, on Saturday to lock up the tournament's top seed and an undefeated regular season.
