Barnies Looking Overseas Following Graduation

After giving it all he had for the University of Maine men’s basketball team for the last four years, Troy Barnies now has his eyes set abroad.

The 6-foot 7-inch forward is looking to capitalize off a career senior year, where he led the Black Bears in points, rebounds and steals per game while tallying the most minutes on the team and the most free throws, and play professional basketball in Europe.

“I think it’s awesome,” Barnies said. “How many people can say they’re getting paid for doing what they dreamed about — what they love?”

Barnies finished the season averaging 14.3 points per game while pulling down almost eight rebounds a contest, earning him a spot on the America East First Team.

Hitting the Links: 3/22/2011

Yesterday, the Links mentioned that spring was in the air and also on the fields (and courts and tracks). With that in mind, let's get caught up on some highlights of the spring sports season to this point.

One of the most exciting achievements of any America East athlete this spring happened just last Friday as Stony Brook freshman pitcher Frankie Vanderka tossed a no-hitter for the Seawolves in a 14-1 win over NJIT. The no-no was the first in Stony Brook history and earned Vanderka national recognition as Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week and the NCBWA National Pitcher of the Week. Vanderka was also named the ECAC Pitcher of the Week.

Welcome to Spring!

The official start of Spring for us in the Northern Hemisphere was Sunday evening, making today the first full day of Spring. Now, the America East schedule and the Gregorian calendar align (although the weather isn't exactly cooperating, seeing as snow is falling in the Northeast).

Yes, the spring sports seasons have already begun and many teams and sports are deep into their schedules, but let's take a quick look back on this past weekend as winter went out with a bang.
